Modern Terminals Celebrates the Arrival of its 100 Millionth Container

12 June 2014

(Hong Kong, 12 June, 2014) – Modern Terminals Limited, the pioneer of the first purpose-built container terminal in Hong Kong, today welcomes the arrival of its 100 millionth twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

Since 1972, when the company set a world record by building Hong Kong’s first container terminal in just 20 months, the company has enjoyed extremely strong growth and now acts as a vital gateway for the container flows that drive the economies of Hong Kong, China and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

One hundred million TEUs, if placed end-to-end, would stretch over 600,000 km – 15 times around the Earth.

Hosting celebrations with customers, employees and contractors’ workers to mark the occasion, Mr Sean Kelly, Modern Terminals’ CEO remarked, “We reached the 30 million TEUs milestone in 1999, 27 years after we began handling containers in Hong Kong. Now, only 15 years later, we have achieved another incredible landmark as we top the 100 million TEUs mark.”

Continuing, Mr Kelly said, “We are extremely grateful to our partner shipping lines for their long-term patronage and dedication to MTL. Through their continued loyalty and our commitment to delivering our brand promises of partnership for value, customer-driven innovation and operational excellence, we are already striving towards the 200 million TEUs milestone and beyond.”

Mr Kelly concluded, “Everyone working at MTL has contributed to this milestone – not only MTL employees but our contractors’ workers as well. We have many people who have worked with us for a long time and this experience, along with our reinvestment in infrastructure and our world class IT systems, acts as the foundation upon which we will build to achieve our future goals. This is a day of celebration for both our staff and our customers.”
