Speakers at the webinar themed “Tapping into the Fast Growing Fruit Markets” organised by the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance (HKSPA) on 5 November highlighted the competitive edges of the Port of Hong Kong as an reliable and agile gateway to China for cold chain products.

The following are the key features that have enhanced the competitiveness of the Port of Hong Kong:

• Ample supply of reefer points provided by HKSPA which is twice the capacity of any terminals in South China as well as the free port status, extensive shipping and barge networks, short trucking time, and rail connection to inland cities in the Mainland.  Reefer boxes can reach major fruit markets in South China within four hours.
• Enhanced capacity, productivity, and extended operating hours at pre-inspection facilities help facilitate a quick customs clearance at the Hong Kong / Mainland boundary.
• Dedicated cold chain products and services offered by shipping lines and freight forwarding companies help ensure cold chain goods reach the markets fresh preserving their value for the shippers.
• Digitalised process such as electronic release order (eRO) which streamlines documentation process and helps speed up the process of import container release.  eRO shortens the import documentation handover process between shipping line, consignee, and trucker via electronic means from 3 days to 1 day.  More digital services are in the pipeline which aim to streamline the hot box process and further shorten the time for inspection.
