Message from Group Managing Director

In 2021, after a year of severe disruptions to the global supply chains, we expect to see the recovery of the global container trade which started in the later part of last year to continue and a positive growth will return.  However, the growth prospects remain fragile due to the many uncertainties including the development of the pandemic, the trade relations between China and US under the new US administration, and Brexit.

In Hong Kong, we continue our efforts to deliver efficiency gains in the Hong Kong Seaport Alliance (HKSPA) with the objective to bring benefits to shipping line customers and other stakeholders. Following our success in achieving significant reduction in inter-terminal trucking and optimisation of the barge operation, our continuous efforts will focus on delivering world-class service levels to strengthen Hong Kong’s competitiveness.  With the acceptance of HKSPA’s commitments by the Hong Kong Competition Commission on 30 October 2020, we are on track for full implementation aiming to deliver the full potential of HKSPA, enhance our value proposition and increase our business in Hong Kong. It is great to see that our infrastructure upgrade projects, carried out over multiple years, enables us to continue to handle the world’s largest 24-containers wide vessels.

After the successful full implementation of the Electronic Release Order (eRO) early last year, other digital services are in the pipeline to enhance further the operational efficiency in Hong Kong.  In addition, HKSPA is continuing to explore different opportunities to make the Port of Hong Kong a “Smart Port”.

In DaChan Bay, we have been successful with a number of initiatives to grow our core container business. At the same time, we have solidified our non-containerised business and the new year includes exciting expansion plans for this part of our DaChan Bay business.  The terminal operating system has been upgraded smoothly and smart gate with automatic damage container alert capability has been implemented to improve efficiency.

In terms of sustainability, we have further enhanced our governance to increase our resilience which is of utmost importance amid the unprecedented challenges brought by the pandemic. An enormous amount of works has been put into protecting the health and safety of our people while ensuring smooth operations of our terminals.  In the area of environmental protection, we are glad that our efforts in creating a green port have been recognised by being granted the Silver Award in the Transport and Logistics category of the 2019 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence, a reputable award programme in the city.  For our own community, we have launched a 4-week i-Fitness Programme for members of the Modern Terminals Summer Fitness Programme Alumni to continue to offer sports training online.

Without doubt, 2021 will continue to be full of challenges.  With our dedicated teams in both Hong Kong and DaChan Bay, I am confident that we will  continue to weather the storm and come out stronger.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to our customers, business partners, and our team members for the great achievements we have made together over the past year.  We will continue to work closely with you all to make 2021 another successful year!
