Modern Terminals is awarded ¡§Caring Company Logo 2007/08¡¨

Modern Terminals has recently been awarded the Caring Company Logo 2007/08, in recognition of its involvement and commitment of being a caring corporate citizen in the previous year.

The Caring Company Scheme is organized by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service to provide a bridging function between the business and the social sectors to foster effective and mutually beneficial partnership relationships, and to recognize private companies which demonstrate good corporate citizenship.

Further North, snow and freezing temperature have been going on for several weeks in a number of inland provinces and municipalities since mid-January, people in Mainland China are affected by the severe weather condition. Statistics show that by late January, more than 77 million people in 14 provinces have been affected, many of them lack food, water, electricity and other basic supplies. Modern Terminals truly lives out the spirit of being a caring company by making a donation to Hong Kong Red Cross China Relief Fund, to support the affected people for emergencies relief, rehabilitation and disaster preparedness measure.

The use of Marked Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel at Modern Terminals contributes to Cleaner Air

Modern Terminals is pleased to announce it has completely replaced industrial diesel oil (IDO) with marked ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD) for all container handling equipment, yard vehicles and contractor tractors. As the plan successfully rolled out at the start of this year, the application of marked ULSD to substitute IDO is expected to achieve an average reduction of SOx emission by approximately 99%.

In the Chief Executive¡¦s Policy Address in the last quarter of 2007, a series of measures were said to be implemented to make our air cleaner, including replacing IDO with marked ULSD in all industrial and commercial processes. As a forward-looking company that cares for the environment, Modern Terminals has swiftly and proactively completed replacing IDO with marked ULSD.

As stipulated in its environmental policy, Modern Terminals is committed to the sustainable development of the container terminal industry and protection of the environment by making environmental considerations an integral part of its culture and decision-making. Modern Terminals is also among the first in the business community to become an endorser of Clean Air Charter contributing to reducing air pollution.

Apart from using marked ULSD, Modern Terminals has also implemented various environmentally friendly measures, such as a large scale of Rubber-tyred Gantry Cranes (RTG) modification in its Hong Kong business unit to achieve saving in fuel consumption and reduction in emission. Modern Terminals has been extending its environmental efforts to other business units on the Mainland. For example, Da Chan Bay Terminal One in Pearl River Delta is the first container terminal in the world that deploys a full fleet of electricity-powered RTGs (E-RTG) whereas Taicang International Gateway in Yangtze River Delta is also implementing E-RTG conversion.
