Inland Gate and Logistics
Service Networks Race Ahead
Following an enthusiastic reception
by the shipping community since it was launched
in mid-2002, Modern Terminals has been continuously
expanding its Inland Gate service network. This
network of one-stop, integrated feeder and terminal
services provides regular and reliable waterway
transportation between Hong Kong and feeder terminals
in 11 ports with 19 terminals in Southern China.
It also offers fixed berthing for designated feeders
to serve the cargo needs of mother vessels alongside
Modern Terminals. The Inland Gate is EDI-enabled,
and it is planned to extend this capability to
all member ports, so that shipping lines and shippers
will be able to check the movements of their containers
across the Southern China region at any time,
via Modern Terminals¡¦ award-winning portal, ModernPorts.
The Inland Gate already covers:
¡P Dongguan
¡P Foshan
¡P Huadu
¡P Huangpu
¡P Jiangmen
¡P Panyu
¡P Shenzhen
¡P Shunde
¡P Zhanjiang
¡P Zhongshan
¡P Zhuhai
Plans are currently underway
to extend it to other major terminals in Southern
China region.

Cross-Boundary
Trucking Pipeline
In addition, Modern Terminals
is endeavouring to enhance and expand the scope
of its other logistics services, such as the recently
launched Inland Depot Service and Haulage Matching
Platform. The integration of these two core services
is contributing to the achievement of the shipping
community¡¦s much-needed ¡§Cross Boundary Trucking
Pipeline¡¨, as it realizes the ¡§Laden-In-Laden-Out¡¨
trucking model for cross boundary trucking operators.
As the pipeline eases cross boundary traffic congestion,
and thus increases the efficiency of cross boundary
operations, it will benefit every stakeholder
in the supply chain, because it will reduce the
time and cost involved in returning empty containers
and repositioning trips.
The Pipeline will also encompass
the logistics services available at the Shenzhen
South-China International Logistics Centre (SILC),
which will offer on-site customs, entry-exit and
quarantine inspection services. A Laden Depot
Service (where cross-boundary tractors can interchange
with inland tractors), together with bonded and
customs supervised warehousing, packing and unpacking,
consolidation and distribution services, will
likewise be added to the Logistics Service Centre
soon.
The Pipeline can help simplify
customs clearance processes, and to increase the
cost-effectiveness and productivity of cross-boundary
trucking. Ultimately the Pipeline will build a
Green Lane for customs on both sides of the boundary,
as well as other value-added services. The new
service has already received a lot of positive
feedback from customers.
All these initiatives have
the common goal of benefiting members of the shipping
community by helping them to streamline their
business processes further, by enhancing their
physical services, making their operations more
efficient, practical use of information technology,
and minimizing regulatory constraints; thus achieving
greater overall operational efficiency.
