Modern
Terminals Gains Higher Operational Efficiency
with
Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER Server
Hong
Kongˇ¦s Leading Container Terminal Operator Benefiting
from
Cost Efficiencies and Higher Response to User
Demands for Operational Applications
after Server
Consolidation to Fujitsu
HONG KONG, 10 May 2006
ˇV Modern Terminals Limited, the longest-established
container terminal operator in Hong Kong, and
Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited, a leading provider
of customer-focused information technology and
telecommunications solutions and services, today
announced a successful completion of a server
consolidation, which deployed Fujitsuˇ¦s latest
server technology to run four main administrative
applications for the innovation-minded port services
provider.
The project was an initiative
based on Modern Terminalsˇ¦ brand promises of delivering
the world-class level of operational excellence
and developing customer-driven innovation through
deploying cutting-edge technologies. Modern Terminalsˇ¦
Internet portal - ModernPorts, financial applications,
facility management/procurement system, and the
Management Information System now run on the Fujitsu
PRIMEPOWER Solaris™ platform.
In fulfilling the above commitments,
Modern Terminals turned to Fujitsu to help simplify
a complicated infrastructure environment that
consisted of multiple operating systems running
on different servers. High system management overheads
and operating costs was another concern that the
IT team wanted to address.
Mr. Cheng Chung Keung, IT Manager-Infrastructure
of Modern Terminals Limited, said, ˇ§We are committed
to achieving service excellence by exceeding our
customersˇ¦ expectation and investing in cutting-edge
technologies to enhance our efficiency and services.
We believe the new deployment of Fujitsuˇ¦s server
technology will enable us to provide high-quality
and flexible services to our valued customers.ˇ¨
Two units of Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER
650 Solaris™ server, eight units of PRIMEPOWER
450 Solaris™ server and the ETERNUS3000 model
100 storage system replaced the existing 20 units
of UNIX and Alpha-based server. Modern Terminals
also implemented the Fujitsu PRIMECLUSTER together
with the Oracle Real Applications Cluster (RAC).
The combined clustering technology helped Modern
Terminals in creating site resilience operating
environment, further increasing the performance
and efficiency of the server infrastructure.
The server consolidation has
helped Modern Terminals gain a few noteworthy
benefits:
- Cost efficiencies: Based on Modern Terminalsˇ¦
6-year cost analysis between the old platform
and Fujitsu, it showed that the Fujitsu platform
offered a significant 32% overall savings in cost.
- System performance boost of 300%: The Fujitsu
solution provided an unparalleled system performance
at a competitive price. Resource capacity has
also improved to handle any upsurge in activity.
It facilitated the IT Department to build more
functions into the applications, if required.
ˇ§The success of the Modern
Terminals consolidation project hinged on one
winning factor – the close co-operation and teamwork
between Modern Terminals IT team and Fujitsu.
Both of us shared the same objective of enjoying
the best benefits out of the new Fujitsu platform.
We are gratified to be Modern Terminalsˇ¦ IT partner
in this project,ˇ¨ said James Pang, General Manager,
Sales Department of Information Systems and Services
Division, Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited. ˇ§As Modern
Terminals continues to expand in Hong Kong and
China, we look forward to continue being a proven
partner for all of their IT needs, be it Solutions
or Services.ˇ¨
